In this article, you will learn:
Copying large files is quite slow.
"I recently used a 7-year-old version of Clonezilla to clone my 2TB hard drive to a larger 4TB one. The process took forever and didn't complete successfully!!! I guess I need faster software to help me out."
Nowadays, most Windows users have the need to clone a hard drive to another one. The reasons vary from one person to another - some want to clone a hard drive to a larger one due to lack of disk space; some aim at improving computer efficiency by cloning to an SSD; others just want to backup data in Windows 7/8/10 via cloning. Whatever the reason is, it's a fact that cloning a hard drive has become a common need.
However, cloning a large hard drive via simple copy and paste usually takes a long time. Obviously, cloning is better than copy and paste. As to why, we need to refer to the differences between copy and clone.
Difference Between Copying and Cloning
What you might be referring to is the difference between shallow copy and deep copy. A shallow copy only replicates the top-level object itself, whereas a deep copy duplicates the object along with all its child objects. In C++, "cloning" is often used as a conventional approach to perform a deep copy of polymorphic class objects.
Not only does cloning ensure that the files are the same, but it also ensures that they are in the exact same physical location on the drive as they were on the source. In some cases, files need to be in a specific and fixed location to work properly. If they are moved, they can become unusable. As such, cloning is generally a safer way to copy data.
Here we offer you the quickest way to clone a hard drive – using a disk cloning software – the Disk Copy Tool. It's a simple and secure disk duplication/clone utility that can help you transfer data and upgrade your hard drive at an ultra-fast speed. But before you start cloning, there are some preparations you need to make.
For a visual guide, watch and follow along with this video to clone your hard drive to a larger HDD or SSD quickly:
Step 1: Download, install, and run a disk cloning tool on your computer.
Click “Disk Mode,” then select the disk that you want to copy or clone. Click “Next” to continue.
Step 2: Select the target disk.
Note: If you are copying or cloning a hard drive, the target disk should be the same size or larger than the source disk.
Step 3: Check and edit the disk layout.
If your target disk is an SSD, remember to check the Treat destination as SSD option.
Click “OK” if the program prompts you to erase data from the target disk.
Step 5: Click “Continue” to start the hard drive cloning process.
